Easdale Island
About the Island of Easdale
The tiny car-free island of Easdale lies in the Firth of Lorn, in Argyll, off the west coast of Scotland. It has much to offer the short or long term visitor. Have a walk around and enjoy the tranquility of this distinctive island. A stroll to the top of the 122ft high hill offers unrivalled views of the Firth of Lorn to the north and many other islands to the south. The shoreline offers the opportunity for beachcombing or soaking up the fresh Atlantic air.
Other areas of interest include the historical remains of what was once the centre of the Scottish slate mining industry. The community owned, award winning museum details the industrial history of the island and area. The still pools, which are a defining feature of Easdale, were once active slate quarries, and together with the wide variety of flora and bird life make Easdale unique.
The island is reached by making a five minute passenger ferry crossing, and visitors will feel immediately welcome amongst the small thriving community which occupies the former slate quarriers' cottages. Easdale is also perfectly situated for exploring the surrounding district with its many attractions and activities. Try a seafari adventure www.seafari.co.uk not only will you have the chance to see some of the local wildlife you will also visit the world famous gulf of corryvreckan whirlpools. Easdale has seen much regeneration in the last few decades and it is primarily down to the community itself. They are determined to create a sustainable future for generations to come. A community development group was set up www.easdale.org/ Some of the achievements so far have been the competion of a new community hall, a continuing, successful, summer arts program www.easdale.org/hall , the purchase of the museum into community ownership and the purchase of the islands main asset the harbour, however, there is still much to be done. Fundraising events are paramount to the islands continuing success. The now famous World Stone Skimming Championships are held every year in September see www.stoneskimming.com
