Welcome to Falmouth

Falmouth is an historic port with a rich maritime history and a flourishing holiday destination. The harbour is the third deepest natural harbour in the world and is a regular port of call to naval vessels, liners and tall ships in addition to a great number of leisure boats.
Falmouth is a town that thrives independently of the influx of visitors each year, with a quite varied local economy and the burgeoning University College Falmouth providing a recent influx of younger town inhabitants studying everything from Art to Media Studies, Drama and Design. Falmouth plays host to a variety of town events and festivals throughout the year including the Cornwall Film Festival, Falmouth Oyster Festival, Falmouth Week and the Tall Ships.
Falmouth has quite a varied history starting from when it sprang into being and later superseded its neighbour Penryn. Under the Killigrew family Falmouth saw more than its share of smuggling and skulduggery with the wealthy Mary Killigrew being one of the UK's most brazen and notorious pirates. In later years Falmouth's importance grew for more legitimate reasons, as a packet ship harbour for carrying mail across the globe to the far-flung corners of the empire and as a trading port.

It was to Falmouth that official news of the victory at Trafalgar was brought, though the news that Nelson had died was far less welcome! The messenger undertook an epic coach journey to London from the waterfront at Falmouth and a memorial still stands commemorating the arrival of the news.
The sea still plays a strong part in the town's economy with the docks undertaking major ship refurbishment and repairs on commercial vessels and also winning a number of long term MOD contracts. The RFA Argus now calls Falmouth it's home port when not on deployment and is a familiar sight in the harbour. The sacrifices that our armed forces may be called upon to make on our behalf are very much part of the town's consciousness. The monument commemorating the WW2 commando raid on St Nazaire was refurbished and dedicated this year and in the Mewrchant Navy association Chaple is a plaque commissioned by local youngsters in memory of the Arctic Convoy campaign - one of very few such commemorative plaques in the UK.
Out on the water, Falmouth's recent maritime events are no less dramatic, if more peaceful in nature. Gig racing is a popular sport in the area and with both Penryn and Falmouth having thriving gig clubs old rivalries are still played out in fierce competitive racing. The tall ships are regular visitors to the local waters, drawing large crowds to vantage points along the coast to watch the start of the tall ships race and to the docks when visitors are allowed onboard. The Maritime Museum pays homage to the complex relationship between humans and the sea in terms of food, the evolution of boat design and the spirit of adventure, discovery and personal challenge that the sea evokes in people. This was perhaps most dramatically brought home when Dame Ellen MacArthur arrived back at Falmouth at the end of her record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the globe.

Falmouth's climate, though not immune to the English rain, is relatively mild due to the sea's influence. For this reason Falmouth's many public spaces have a rather exotic appearance with Dracaena Palms and other plants not usually seen in the UK flourishing. This theme extends to many of the local gardens open to the public like Trebah and Glendurgan. Overall, Falmouth is a town full of character with a welcoming atmosphere, pleasant climate (mostly) and excellent attractions and facilities.
